Loved reading this short piece in which 419 qualitative researchers from 32 countries write very directly that they reject GenAI in reflexive qualitative research because 1. GenAI is incapable of meaning-making; 2. Qualitative research needs to be done by humans; and 3. GenAI is too harmful to the environment and to the human workers who need to filter out toxic content.
And I loved especially that they included the third point, about which they write “While this third point is more concerned with ethical objections rather than a methodological concern, we see them as interconnected and warn against ignoring these complex negative impacts of our choices on others, especially in light of points 1 and 2.” So nice to see so many people position themselves so clearly!
