The only entry in the Shorter Oxford English dictionary is ‘Bildungsroman – a novel dealing with one person’s formative years or spiritual education’, with the translation bildung = education (and ‘formative’ implying childhood and teenage experiences). French has quite a selection of words to choose between for translating the English ‘education’, and Swedish has undervisning and utbildning (at least).
